Salinas, Ca. (May 9-11, 2013)
After an interesting travel situation Robby was relieved to arrive at the track on Thursday even after only getting 3 hours of sleep. Thursday was an action packed busy day for the Playboy MX-5 cup with 2 practice sessions, and qualifying, so Robby’s mental toughness would surely be tested after only 3 hours of sleep. After combined practice Robby found himself P3 behind Kenton Koch, and Lucas Bize. Next in Qualifying, after making some setup changes, Robby ended up P4. The qualifying format for the Playboy MX-5 Cup is unique in that for a double race weekend there is only one qualifying. A drivers best lap sets their position for race 1, and their second best lap sets their position for race 2. Robby’s second best lap was god enough to put him in
P3 for the start of Race 2.
Race 1 was set to start at 10:00 am on Friday. As the lights went out Robby dropped the clutch and made a really good start, gaining two positions before turn two. Getting to the brake zone of T2 Robby exploited a gap, going inside 3 Playboy cars, and in doing that getting by Kenton Koch for the lead. In the ensuing laps Drake Kemper, and Kenton got around Foley as he slotted into third place. The hard charging Lucas Bize got around Foley, and after a few laps both Foley and Bize were able to get around Kemper. Robby rode around in third until the last lap where he had an opportunity to pass Lucas goin
g into the corkscrew, but it would have been a rather low percentage move so Foley smartly settled for 3rd Place. This was a good points day for Foley considering his mechanical failures in Sebring.
Race 2 was a bit more intense. Robby once again made a good start moving up two second place, but within the first few laps Drake Kemper made contact with Robby three times, one of which was to the left rear wheel that evidently causing some kind of drive line damage, making shifting difficult. Following the incident Robby rode around limping the car around, and when Drake Kemper went off Robby was P3 where he satyed until the last lap when David Knight caught up and got around Robby. Foley knew his strengths
and set up a pass out of T6, and into the corkscrew where he overtook Knight to regain 3rd place. Another podium gave Foley enough points to jump him up to 5th position in the championship after his frustrating Sebring week.
Robby would like to thank Mazda, SCCA Pro, BFGoodrich, and his parents for the support.
